In my free time i've made a level for Severed Steel, which is a fast FPS with an heavy emphasis on movemet and momentum.
The theme of my level was ESCAPE and Air movement. In this game there are vent that can push the player in a direction. I wanted to use it in differents setup to create some variations. In addition to the theme, killings foes is not a requirement to get throught, it's more that they are here to slow you, because in this game you're quite a monster, alos, i watched some speedruns of the game and in the vast majority of the time, they 'aren't killing a lot of ennemies. You can play the level quite differently, some will kill everything and some other are here to beat the timer.
Before i went into the level editor of the game, i planned my level with some sketches on draw.io and other on a paper. To do that, as i went further into the planning phase, i created differents sections of the level/ beats, to help me create a feeling of progression for the player.
The 2nd beat is the summit of it where the player need to wall ride et use some fans to move forward. There is a small transition between the 2nd and the 3rd beat, where for the first time a fan is an obstacle for him. It' s slowing and some foes are there.
In the third beat, a fan is there to push the player in the air and there is a lot of ennemies to fight. In the meantime the player need to destroy some explosive before leaving
Geometry :
In Severed Steel, every wall is destructible (except one), so players can create their own way to get trought by shooting on it or with the hand cannon (can explode a part of a wall). You can also wall jump and do lot of cool stuff, but it can make a level quite hard to do. With all this information, i tried several types of spaces, sometimes its some narrow corridors with ennemies to create an emphasis on tension, sometimes its more big squared spaces fillet with foes, because the player need to move a lot to dodge bullets.
First variation of the level :
the 3rd beat isn"t in the version of this level, because it didn"t fit well with what i wanted to do. In this end i made another beat but again i wasn't very satisfied with it so i made the 2nd variation of this.
2nd variation of the level :
3rd variation of the level :
In this variation of the level, this time i really wanted to make an emphasis on using vents and getting the satisfaction of getting rid of all ennemies, i wanted to make it feel more nervous. (It was kind of complicated to make a top-down view of this so, i was inspired by the layout of a level in Hotline Miami with my own touch.
Also the level is not available on the steam workshop of the game because i got it on Epic Games...
